Job Description

The Histotechnologist plays a critical role in the health care setting. These specialists are trained to process human tissue (in a procedure called a biopsy), from any part of the body, and prepare it for interpretation by a pathologist. The pathologist determines whether a disease or other disparity is present in the tissue and this information is relayed to the patient.

A Histotechnologist must master the process of preparing biological specimen for observation. The basics steps in processing biological tissue includes accessioning, trimming, embedding, sectioning and staining. Each of these steps require in depth knowledge of chemistry, human anatomy, physics, microscopy, and most importantly, laboratory safety techniques and methodology.
